Video: Anderson Silva Talks About Upcoming Clash With Chael Sonnen

UFC Middleweight Champion Anderson “The Spider” Silva is widely considered to be one of the best pound for pound fighters in the world but the Brazilian striking expert alienated himself from many fans with his polarizing UFC 112 performance against Demian Maia in April. Despite the rampant fan criticism Silva drew for his showboating, no one has been more vocal on the subject of Silva’s character flaws as top middleweight contender Chael Sonnen. Sonnen has been publicly trashing Silva and his camp since before he was even announced to be the next title challenger and has pulled in quite a bit of attention for his efforts. For his part, the champion has stayed characteristically cool and has kept his hat out of the trash talk ring; that is, until now. A recent hype video for Silva and Sonnen’s upcoming UFC 117 meeting released by the UFC shows “The Spider” subtly taking off his gloves and removing his self-imposed ban on trash talk.

“Chael, as a fighter, is a good politician,” said Silva. “He thinks he knows something, but on the day of the fight, when we are all alone in there, he’ll have his chance. Once again, he’s saying crap”.

Sonnen has made it a point to blast Silva for everything from his sometimes erratic behavior to the level of competition he has faced. Sonnen, who recently withdrew his candidacy for Oregon state senate, has made some questionable statements during his Silva-bashing tour and has more than once seemingly contradicted himself; this is something that “The Spider” takes note of and exception with, especially in the case of Sonnen’s claim that Silva has never fought a wrestler. “The Spider” has defeated Dan Henderson, a founding member of Team Quest, Sonnen’s primary training camp, and does not hesitate to remind Sonnen of this fact.

“What he’s saying is disrespecting me, he’s disrespecting me and all opponents I’ve faced,” Silva said. “In my opinion, Dan Henderson is one of the best wrestlers in MMA. With him being a politician, he should really pay attention to what he’s saying.”

In the video, Silva also took a few jabs at Sonnen’s brief political career.

“First Chael says he wants to be a fighter, then he says he wants to be a politician,” Silva pointed out. “Which one is it? You can only choose one.” He added, “Or do you want to be a politician, or do you wanna be a fighter or you want to be a gangster. I chose, for myself, being a fighter. If I wasn’t a fighter, I’d be a cop, and in that case it’d be a serious problem, because you’re a gangster and I’m a cop. Well, I’m a fighter and you yet don’t know what you are, you’ll still choose what you’ll be.”

As far as what he plans to do about Sonnen’s trash talk, Silva said he plans to do what he always has: win.

“I’ll keep doing my job the same way I’ve always done,” said the champion. “I’ll do a good fight, as I always do, I’ll try to show my technical superiority”

Silva and Sonnen will meet to dispute the middleweight title August 7th in the main event of UFC 117 which takes place at the Oracle Arena in Oakland, California. You can watch the full interview with Silva below:
