Fresh off of submitting living legend Fedor Emelianenko last month at Strikeforce: Fedor Vs. Werdum, Fabricio Werdum is still on cloud nine. Werdum noted that business for his gym has been booming ever since his shocking win.
“Everything has changed for the better for me,” Werdum told Super Lutas. “After this victory I have over 30 calls a day in my gym, more students have come, the seminar values have increased.
“It’s like any other profession – a singer, a football player – as you go on growing and gaining prominence, value changes.”
After the win, Werdum noted that he was confident in his ability to win all along and was willing to oblige Fedor’s desire for a rematch. However, Werdum is now saying that a rematch may have to wait until next year in order to undergo elbow surgery.
“After these seminars I will have surgery on my elbow that I’ve been putting off for some time,” Werdum explained. “As we are already in July and I want to fight only by being 100% I find it hard to fight this year, because after the recovery is physical therapy, conditioning and everything else. So I’ll come back next year.”
Emelianenko has one more fight left on his Strikeforce contract and has expressed his desire to fight Werdum again. However, Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker has talked about having Fedor face Strikeforce heavyweight champion Alistair Overeem for his next fight. It remains to be seen if Strikeforce will try to have Fedor face Overeem, or wait until next year to make the Fedor – Werdum rematch.
