MMA neophyte and boxing champion James “Lights Out” Toney has kept himself at least on the periphery, if not occasionally in the center, of MMA news since he began campaigning to UFC President Dana White for a shot in the UFC sometime around UFC 108 in January. Through interviews with respected MMA media outlets to self-released hype videos, MMA fans have been fed a steady diet of Toney’s trash talk for somewhere around seven months. Usually, Toney focuses mainly on self-promotion but occasionally he takes aim at the sport of MMA and some of its various personalities/practitioners. In his latest interview with FightHype.com, Toney responded to White’s comments that promoting a James Toney MMA fight is tantamount to promoting a freakshow and also took aim at fellow crossover star UFC Heavyweight Champion Brock Lesnar.
“As far as Dana White goes, the only freak show I got is the one between my legs,” said Toney. “I’ll let him see it and slap him with it if he wants. My thing is, Dana White doing all of that talkin’, after I knock his boy out, he can get in the cage. He do all that talkin’ like he’s a fighter, you know what I’m sayin’? Alls he gotta do is take his nice slippers off and come up in the cage and I will whoop his a** too.”
Toney is currently the International Boxing Organization and North American Boxing Organization Heavyweight Champion and won both belts by defeating Fres Oquendo by split decision in a match for the at-the-time vacant titles (interestingly enough, Oquendo was dropped during an exhibition bout against former UFC Heavyweight Champion Andrei Arlovski in February). Toney explained to FightHype that his plan is to compete both in MMA and in boxing and that after he fights former UFC Heavyweight and Light Heavyweight Champion Randy Couture in August he will defend his boxing titles and then make a return to MMA against the current UFC Heavyweight Champion, whom Toney has apparently taken issue with.
“After August 28th, I’m going to win in the UFC, then I’m coming back to boxing and defending my title,” Toney said. “Hopefully, I can have a unification bout with that b***h David Haye and then I’m going back to the UFC and hopefully, I can fight old, stiff-a**, coward-a** Brock Lesnar. That motherf***er ain’t s***.”
“Did he have the nerve to say he’s still a bad motherf***er after the fight? Well that motherf***er had a pink skirt on that night,” Toney went on. “You don’t turn your back and run from punches. They ain’t never seen me, but come August 28th, I’m going to be ready; all guns blazing. They have no idea.”
Strangely absent from Toney’s rants (at least those with a negative tone) has been the name of his upcoming opponent, Randy Couture. Those two will square off this August 28th in the co-main event of UFC 118: Edgar Vs. Penn 2 which is going down at the TD Garden in Boston, Massachusetts. Toney will get his chance that evening to back up everything he has said in the cage and he has quite a bit to back up.
