Brock Lesnar continued the theme of the comeback tonight in Las Vegas by weathering a brutal 10-8 first round at the end of Shane Carwin’s 5-XL gloves only to steamroll Carwin in the second and secure an arm triangle submission to grab the victory and to unify the UFC Heavyweight Championship.
After a momentary feeling out period, Carwin blasted Lesnar with an uppercut and from there took the fight’s momentum. For the rest of the first round Carwin had Lesnar against the cage trying to (and barely succeeding in that effort) survive as Carwin dropped bombs from above. The second round showed that Carwin had gassed himself out as he began pushing his punches and moving more slowly. Lesnar capitalized and took Carwin to the ground where he easily established mount and immediately looked to finish the fight with an arm triangle, this time succeeding.
Lesnar displayed another side of himself and showed that perhaps his near-fatal bout with diverticulitis has humbled him as he gave thanks to his family, friends and training partners after his win and even gave Carwin props for his early success. Lesnar likely won over some MMA fans tonight with his newfound humility and astonishing come-from-behind win. It looks as though Cain Velasquez is next for Lesnar and, after his performance tonight, he had better start gameplanning.
