Anderson Silva and Chael Sonnen will now be flanked by a welterweight rematch between top contenders Thiago Alves and Jon Fitch at UFC 117 on August 7th.
“Now its official twizzels! 117 co-main event!!! Feels good to get back to work! Oakland here I come… 2 words PAIN and BLOOD! Love u all!” an excited Alves Tweeted.
According to MMAJunkie, UFC officials have confirmed the pivotal match-up will serve as the night’s co-main event.
The 170-pounders originally fought four years ago at “UFC Fight Night 5.” Fitch won via TKO following a vicious up kick to the “Pitbull’s” noggin.
Alves underwent an angiogram before he was finally cleared by doctors to return to action. Following the medical procedure, UFC president Dana White had Tweeted that the welterweights would throw down at UFC 115 in Vancouver earlier this month, but later decided that he would push the bout back.
Now that their August date has been finalized, fans will get to see the explosive Alves back in an Octagon for the first time in over 13 months. He was last seen receiving a unanimous decision loss to division champ Georges St-Pierre at UFC 100.
