UFC castoff Fabricio Werdum will be putting his impressive jiu-jitsu pedigree to the test this weekend against one of the world’s best fighters in Fedor Emelianenko. Werdum is a huge underdog heading into this fight and many fans were upset to hear that he would be Fedor’s next opponent, feeling that “Vai Cavalo” is not worthy enough to take on “The Last Emperor.” Werdum understands why he is not the betting favorite against Emelianenko, but said on a recent appearance on Inside MMA that he will convince fans of his worthiness after he shocks the world by submitting Fedor.
“I know it will be a difficult fight because Fedor is the best in the world,” said Werdum. “I know a lot of people don’t believe in me because Fedor wins every time he fights, but everybody will believe in me after this fight.”
Werdum is also not kidding himself about where his best chances at victory are. Released from the UFC after suffering a knockout to Junior Dos Santos, Werdum knows that he will not be out-striking Emelianenko anytime soon and will be looking to get the fight to the ground because of that.
“My ways are on the ground,” he said. “I want to go to the ground because I believe in my jiu-jitsu.”
Werdum also offered up a surprising prediction as to how he believes he will defeat one of the best fighters to ever compete.
“Next Saturday I will choke [Fedor] – believe in me – in the first round,” he said.
Werdum will get the chance to prove himself to the world this Saturday at Strikeforce: Fedor Vs. Werdum where he takes on Emelianenko in the main event. Also on the card is Cristiane “Cyborg” Santos, who will be defending her Strikeforce Women’s Featherweight belt against Jan Finney. Cung Le and Scott Smith’s rematch will also appear on the main card as will a lightweight tilt between former Strikeforce Lightweight Champion Josh Thomson and Pat Healy.
