MMAFighting is reporting that Wanderlei “The Axe Murderer” Silva has been removed from his upcoming UFC 116 bout with Yoshihiro Akiyama due to fractured ribs that the Brazilian suffered in training. The news was apparently confirmed by UFC President Dana White this afternoon.
White also told MMAFighting that Akiyama will remain on the card, which goes down on July 3rd, and that the UFC’s matchmakers are currently searching for a last-minute replacement for the Japanese Judo player.
Akiyama last appeared in action against Alan Belcher at UFC 100 where he took home a split-decision victory. Silva last fought at UFC 110 where he defeated British standout Michael Bisping via unanimous decision.
UFC 116 goes down next weekend MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada and will be headlined by a title unification bout between UFC Heavyweight Champion Brock Lesnar and Interim UFC Heavyweight Champion Shane Carwin.
