UFC heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar is getting ready to defend his title against interim title holder Shane Carwin at UFC 116: Lesnar vs. Carwin next month. To show that Lesnar is leaving no stone unturned for his first title defense in a year, Lesnar has sought the expertise of the man whom he defeated for the heavyweight title, Randy Couture.
“Obviously I fought Randy a year or so ago, and have just kept in touch with him,” Lesnar stated.
“We were at ‘Fight For The Troops’ in Fort Bragg,” noted Couture. “I invited him to come train in Vegas at my facility, and he extended an invitation to come hunting or fishing or attend one of his camps. Quite awhile later we managed to get together and actually train.”
Lesnar was originally slated to face Carwin for the title last November until Lesnar fell ill after contracting diverticulitis. The bout was re-scheduled for this past January until it seemed like Lesnar’s illness might be career-ending. Although his life hung in the balance, Lesnar was able to make a “miraculous” recovery and is excited to get back in the Octagon after a year-long layoff.
