At the recent UFC 115 Fan Q & A last week, top middleweight contender Chael Sonnen continued his entertaining (if not at times off base) character assassination of champion Anderson Silva. Most of what he said he has said before; he described how he will beat Anderson down and how Anderson has been ducking him, etc. This time however, he also took aim at Silva’s credentials and blasted the renowned jiu jitsu experts and twins Antonio Rodrigo and Antonio Rogerio Nogueira who awarded Silva his jiu jitsu black belt.
“He’s got a black belt under the Nogueira brothers,” Sonnen pointed out. “I think a black belt under the Nogueira brothers is like saying, ‘I got a free toy in my happy meal.’ I don’t really understand what the big deal is; one of them is a punching bag and the other one I just ignore. He’s really irrelevant.”
Sonnen also offered his view of his skills in the face of Silva’s.
“I’m gonna throw him on his back and beat a hole in his face to tell you the truth,” Sonnen said of his plans for his UFC 117 meeting with the feared Brazilian striker. “Until I can do that I’m gonna have to stand up there on our feet and I’ve been at that a long time. I have no illusions of going and competing in professional boxing or something like that but I can fight on my feet. I know what I’m doing there.”
The aspiring politician also offered to fans the source of his motivation.
“One thing is jealousy on my part,” he said. “He’s got what I want and envy keeps me up at night. Is that true? Can we just be fair and say that? He’s got twelve pounds of gold and I want it. There can be only one champion. We can’t all get along.”
Sonnen will get a choice to back his words up when he faces Anderson Silva in the main event UFC 117: Silva vs. Sonnen. The event takes place on August 7, 2010 from the Oracle Arena in Oakland, California.
