According to reports, former WEC featherweight king Urijah Faber will make his bantamweight debut for the company when he meets Takeya Mizugaki in a yet-to-be-announced event on August 18th – likely to be dubbed WEC 50.
MMAWeekly.com was the first to report the news yesterday.
After an unprecedented title run in the WEC’s featherweight division, Faber lost his belt to Mike Brown at WEC 36 and followed it up with a unanimous decision loss in their mulligan at WEC 41.
Although his lopsided loss to Aldo in the company’s only pay-per-view broadcast must have influenced his decision, “The California Kid” told 5thRound.com prior to the contest that he would consider mega fights in other weight classes if he were to lose the highly anticipated showdown with the Brazilian.
Mizugaki holds a respectable 13-4-2 record, however made quite the splash in his WEC debut as a last-minute replacement to challenge then champ Miguel Torres for the bantamweight crown. Despite dropping a unanimous decision, the Japanese stud won over many stateside fans with his Rocky Balboa-esque performance.
