MMAJunkie is reporting that, according to sources close to both fighters, Melvin Guillard will most likely get what he asked for and will be taking on fellow lightweight Jeremy Stephens at UFC 119. According to the sources, both fighters are expected to sign their bout agreements shortly.
Guillard recently bounced back from a submission loss to Nate Diaz by posting wins over Ronnys Torres and, most recently, Waylon Lowe. Guillard credits his recent strong performances to joining the team of fighters working together under renowned trainer Greg Jackson in Albuquerque, New Mexico. During his post-fight speech after his TKO win over Waylon Lowe at UFC 114, Guillard called out Jeremy Stephens as an opponent that he believed would offer him a good, competitive fight.
Stephens is also on a two fight win streak as he has earned victories over Justin Bucholz and Sam Stout, respectively. His win over Bucholz broke a two fight losing skid that saw the Iowan succumb to defeat to Joe Lauzon and Gleison Tibau. His most recent fight, a hard-fought, split decision win over Stout at UFC 113 netted him a Fight of the Night bonus and has many praising his striking abilities as he was often able to out-strike Stout, a respected kick boxer.
UFC 119 has yet to be officially announced but–also courtesy MMAJunkie–is expected to take place on September 25 at the Conseco Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, Indiana and will also feature a bout between heavyweights Matt Mitrione and Joey Beltran.
