As noted earlier, Cung Le will make his return from a year-long hiatus to rematch ever-durable Scott Smith on June 26 at Strikeforce: Fedor Vs. Werdum.
Smith and Le met previously at Strikeforce: Evolution in December of 2009. For the majority of three rounds Le teed off on Smith using his unique style of Sanshou influenced kickboxing but, in typical Scott Smith fashion, the man known as “Hands of Steel” dropped the hammer on a tiring Le late in the third and knocked him out with a left hook. Neither man has competed since that fight.
Le entered his first bout with Smith having come off of a year layoff that saw him relinquish the Strikeforce Middleweight title that he briefly held in order to pursue acting roles. Close to the same amount of time has passed since they fought and it has been proven that a fighter not fully focused on the fight game is usually competing at a pretty serious disadvantage. Even though Smith has been out of action for the same amount of time as Le, he likely has a step up since he has probably been training and keeping himself immersed in MMA; a factor which marks the difference between a full time fighter and a fighter/actor.
Smith and Le will join headliners Fedor Emelianenko and Fabricio Werdum, as well as Strikeforce Women’s Featherweight Champion Cristiane “Cyborg” Santos (who will be taking on challenger Jan Finney), and former Strikeforce Lightweight Champion Josh Thomson (who was recently announced to be appearing ont he card against Pat Healy) on the Strikeforce/M-1 Global co-promoted card. Strikeforce: Fedor Vs Werdum goes down June 26th at the HP Pavilion in San Jose, California and will be broadcast live on Showtime.
