According to reports, the Bruce Buffer of the WEC – better known as Joe Martinez – will leave his cage announcing duties behind, effective immediately.
Martinez, as well as the rest of the WEC television staff, was MIA last month in the promotion’s first pay-per-view broadcast, “WEC 48: Aldo vs. Faber.”
It appears as though Martinez’s other responsibilities were at the center of his dismissal, as he believes his announcing job with Golden Boy Promotions played a role in his exit.
“I regret that what has been a great relationship is coming to an end,” Martinez told MMADieHards.com. “Unfortunately, the best decision for my family at this time is to keep my commitment to Golden Boy.
“Another main factor was my work within other areas of combat sports. While I do not feel my association with a Spanish-language boxing production has any crossover, it appears to have been a big issue.”
Martinez had five fights remaining on his 2010 contract.
The release will do nothing to squash the rumors of an impending UFC-WEC merger, with the UFC sucking up its sister company in order to build one mega MMA organization
