Before the UFC light heavyweight championship belt could even get warm around the waist of newly crowned champion Mauricio “Shogun” Rua, UFC President Dana White announced that the winner of the UFC 114 bout between Rashad Evans and Quinton “Rampage” Jackson on May 29th will likely get the first crack at Shogun’s belt.
“I was just in doing an interview with ESPN and Rashad was all over me about it,” White told Ariel Helwani of MMAFighting.com. “Obviously more than likely yes, one of those two is going to get the shot at the title.”
While Rua has never faced Evans before, Rampage is no stranger to the new champ. Rua defeated Jackson in the opening round of the PRIDE 2005 middleweight Grand Prix via TKO in the first round.
