With just a little over a month before the curtain is drawn on their May 29th event, it appears the Light Heavyweight Grand Prix that was to be featured in Dream.14 has been canceled.
According to Sherdog.com, the cancellation stemmed from disinterest by Dream’s domestic television carrier, the Tokyo Broadcasting System, in broadcasting the tourney.
Apparently, multiple sources claim the decision to scrap the 205-pound tournament as far back as three weeks ago. However, Sherdog’s source – a manager for one of the contestants – claims there were just notified this past Tuesday.
The proposed eight-man tournament was scheduled to begin at Dream 14 on May 29 at the Saitama Super Arena in Saitama, Japan.
UFC veteran Renato “Babalu” Sobral, former Strikeforce light heavyweight champ Gegard Mousasi, Deep light heavyweight tournney winner Yoshiyuki Nakanishi, journeyman Thierry Rameau Sokoudjou and Christian M’Pumbu were all rumored as potential participants for the Grand Prix.
Here is what the fight card now looks like, less one Light Heavyweight Tournament:
Kazuyuki Miyata vs. Takafumi Otsuka
Akiyo “Wicky” Nishiura vs. Hideo Tokoro
Joachim Hansen vs. Hiroyuki Takaya
Nick Diaz vs. Hayato Sakurai (non-title fight)
