After much speculation, it appears the highly anticipated rematch between former lightweight king BJ Penn and Frankie Edgar will indeed headline UFC 118 inside the TD Garden in Boston, Massachusetts.
Penn stated last Tuesday in a video blog that Octagon brass had reached out to him to arrange an immediate rematch, however FightersOnly spoke with sources close to the situation today that confirmed the mulligan will go down on August 28th.
Penn and Edgar battled for 25 grueling minutes in some of the most difficult rounds to score in mixed martial arts history. One extra jab here or a flurry there could have meant the difference between leaving UFC 112 with UFC gold or not.
Edgar did a masterful job in using his cat-like quickness to engage just long enough to land shots, while avoiding damage in return. The Jersey boy’s speed and movement kept Penn off balance for much of the contest, appearing to frustrate the former title holder as they entered the championship rounds.
Kenny Florian and Gray Maynard are also rumored to be their opening act on the pay-per-view broadcast. It’s believed that scrap would serve as a 155-pound top contender bout.
