It was a night of upsets at Strikeforce: Nashville, as the underdog came out with his hand raised in each title bout at tonight’s event.
Muhammed “King Mo” Lawal improved his record to 7-0 as he used his superior wrestling to keep Gegard Mousasi at bay during their fight. Lawal scored takedown after takedown throughout the five-round bout to earn a unanimous decision victory and to take the Strikeforce Light Heavyweight Championship.
Probably the most highly anticipated bout amongst MMA enthusiasts saw Strikeforce Lightweight Champion Gilbert Melendez dominate DREAM lightweight champion Shinya Aoki for five straight rounds to garner a unanimous decision victory. Melendez was able to stuff every takedown attempt from Aoki and dominate the Japanese superstar with his superior stand-up. While the bout was far from a classic, it catapults Melendez up near the top of the lightweight rankings.
Strikeforce Middleweight Champion Jake Shields spoiled the Strikeforce debut of Dan Henderson, as Shields scored a unanimous decision win over the former PRIDE champion. Henderson started the fight off with a bang, and had Shields in major trouble in the first round after landing several of his trademark overhand rights. Shields regrouped, and spent the next four rounds taking Henderson to the ground and punishing the challenger with punches from the top. Shields now finds himself in the unique position of being a free agent while holding the Strikeforce Middleweight Championship.
