The challengers vying to capture the UFC lightweight and middleweight titles tomorrow at “UFC 112: Invincible” are prohibitive underdogs going into their respective bouts.

Not many believe that Frankie Edgar or Demian Maia have much of a chance to strike gold in Abu Dhabi, especially if you ask the oddsmakers.

According to, the planet’s best 185-pounder enters the contest a 8-to-1 favorite to earn his 12th consecutive win. Maia, on the other hand, steps into the biggest fight of his career as a 5-to-1 underdog.

Penn’s a heavy 7.50-to-1 favorite to make his third consecutive title defense. Although Edgar is as gritty a lightweight as they come, the Jersey boy checks-in at +475.

It’s hard to argue against either Penn or Silva not leaving the Concert Arena victorious, but as we all know stranger things have happened.

Former UFC welterweight champion Matt Serra earned his belt by knocking off 11-to-1 favorite Georges St-Pierre at UFC 69, and most would agree that Edgar and Maia stand a far better chance than Serra did heading into his title fight back in April 2007.

Nobody questions the skills of either Edgar or Maia, but unfortunately they are facing two of the best fighters in the history of the sport, during the prime of their legendary careers.
