Although he hasn’t lost a lightweight scrap in over eight years, champ BJ Penn claims he won’t be taking Frankie Edgar lightly when they meet this Saturday at “UFC 112: Invincible.”
Intensifying the possibility for a potential letdown is the fact the Hawaiian’s a heavy 7-to-1 favorite to make his third consecutive title defense.
Despite having all the chips stacked in his corner, the planet’s baddest 155-pounder is fully prepared for the multitude of challenges his opponent presents.
“Frankie Edgar’s not a guy to look past,” Penn stated during a recent conference call. “This isn’t a guy to play around with. Anyone who looks past him is going to end up with a loss on his record.”
It appears Gray Maynard was the only one to take the Jersey boy seriously, as Edgar holds an impressive 11-1 professional mark. Maynard took an easy unanimous decision over him at “UFC Fight Night 13? back in April 2008.
Edgar was most recently seen submitting Matt Veach with a vicious rear-naked choke at “The Ultimate Fighter: Heavyweights Finale” this past December. He’ll be riding a three-fight winning streak into the Concert Arena in Abu Dhabi.
“I know Frankie’s got quick hands and good wrestling,” Penn said of Edgar’s refined MMA game. “I think he might try and kick me a lot. I don’t want to underestimate his kicks. Frankie’s a great scrambler, a great wrestler.
“You never know what’s going to happen in a fight. I don’t have a specific gameplan to impose on anybody.”
Penn owns a dominant 15-5-1 record and will go down as the lightweight division’s G.O.A.T. when it’s all said and done. In his last outing at UFC 107, he earned a fifth round TKO victory when he sliced Diego Sanchez’s forehead open with his shin.
His only 155-pound blemish came when he dropped a majority decision to Jens Pulver at UFC 35 back in January of 2002.
Don’t forget that it’s an early start this Saturday in Abu Dhabi, with the live pay-per-view broadcast beginning at 1PM ET/10AM PT. However, a same-day replay will also be made available during the UFC’s customary 10PM ET/7PM PT time slot.
