To nobody’s surprise, middleweight champion Anderson Silva is heavily favored to retain his strap against Demian Maia at “UFC 112: Invincible.”
The planet’s deadliest 185-pounder enters the contest a 8-to-1 favorite to make his seventh consecutive title defense. Maia, on the other hand, steps into the biggest fight of his career as a 5-to-1 underdog.
Silva was originally slated to face top contender Vitor Belfort on the April 10th show, however the former UFC light heavyweight champion was forced to pull out of the highly anticipated bout due to a shoulder injury.
Maia took a unanimous decision over Dan Miller at UFC 109 in February. The Brazilian jiu jitsu wizard owns an impressive 12-1 professional record and has finished in 10 of those wins, eight by way of submission.
Silva was last seen jabbing Forrest Griffin into unconsciousness at UFC 101 last August. “The Spider” is currently riding an 11-fight win streak, disposing all but one of those foes before the final horn.
Most would agree that he’s as close to unbeatable as they come in the world of mixed martial arts.
UFC 112 takes place today inside the Concert Arena in Abu Dhabi. It’s an early start time, so if you intend on watching the event live, the pay-per-view broadcast jumps off at 1PM ET/10AM PT.
In case you were wondering, welterweight stud Georges St-Pierre was an 8-to-1 favorite against Dan Hardy at UFC 111 last month.
