Shane Carwin Can’t Stop Smiling About “Lifetime Award”

UFC heavyweight Shane Carwin captured the interim title in explosive fashion after he collected his 12th consecutive first round knockout by putting Frank Mir down at “UFC 111: St-Pierre vs. Hardy.”

“It’s a lifetime award right here,” Carwin said of the gold UFC president Dana White wrapped around his waist. “It’s possible for every American out there. I’m speechless.”

Based on Carwin’s violent history, the heavyweight scrap wasn’t expected to go past the opening stanza, and the engineer-turned champion certainly didn’t disappoint. After a brief clinch against the cage, Carwin landed a barrage of uppercuts that sent Mir to the canvas.

“That’s where I go and finish the fight, man. I saw him start to fade, and right there I just let go,” Carwin stated of his vicious killer instincts.

The former two-time champion rolled over on his stomach and Carwin immediately pounced. The referee had no choice but to pull him off the battered Mir at 3:48 in the first round, guaranteeing him a date with UFC champ Brock Lesnar later this summer.

“Finally. It was canceled two times. It was destiny that we meet,” Cawin said of the opportunity to face the former WWE superstar.

Although he held a perfect 11-0 record entering the five-round affair, some questioned the validity behind his shot at a title to begin with, and afterwords Lesnar suggested he check the credentials behind his newly-found hardware.

“It was a good fight, he’s still wearing my belt,” Lesnar told the Prudential Center crowd. “That’s a make-believe belt. I have to give him the fight that I was supposed to give him last November.”

Prior to Saturday night’s victory, Carwin hadn’t been seen inside an Octagon since putting Gabriel Gonzaga to sleep at UFC 96 last March. His career has been put on hold due to Lesnar’s health status, as the 265-pounders were expected to square off at UFC 106, and then again at UFC 108 in January.

Now that the former WWE employee has been granted a clean bill of health, the two can’t wait to unify the crown at UFC 116 on July 3rd, where Lesnar is expected to make his highly anticipated return.

“It was a good fight, Shane, but that’s the wrong belt you’re wearing,” Lesnar stated. “I’ve got the championship belt. That’s the bottom line.”

To which Carwin cordially responded, “I couldn’t agree more, baby, that’s why I am coming after it.”

This should prove to be the most explosive 4th of July weekend in UFC history.
