During a video interview with MMAFighting’s Ariel Helwani, Stephan Bonnar (11-7) confirmed he will be stepping back in the cage against Krzysztof Soszynski (19-9-1) and that they will likely join Brock Lesnar and Shane Carwin on the roster of fighters competing at UFC 116 on July 3rd. The fight will be a rematch of their UFC 110 meeting in Sydney, Australia.
Bonnar and Soszynski squared off on the undercard of “UFC 110: Nogueira Vs. Velasquez” and fought a hard and close two rounds before the fight was stopped at 1:04 of the third round due to a cut on Bonnar’s forehead. Soszynski was declared the winner by TKO because the referee in charge of the fight failed to see that the cut was the result of an accidental headbutt delivered by Soszynski. Had the referee caught the foul the fight would have ended either as a disqualification loss for Soszysnki (depending on the ref’s view of whether it was accidental or intentional), or, since two of the three rounds were completed, with a technical decision (where the bout’s scoring would be based on the judge’s scorecards of the two completed rounds).
Bonnar tried to have the loss overturned in an appeal issued with the Combat Sports Authority of New South Wales but was denied. The CSA of NSW’s ruling to uphold the ref’s decision was surprising since any review of the tape clearly shows the accidental headbutt causing the cut.
Both Bonnar and Soszynski immediately agreed to a rematch and Bonnar said in the interview that he has received his contract for the fight and that everything is in place for the two light-heavyweights to finish up where they left off.
