UFC Welterweight Champion Georges St-Pierre wasn’t the only one disappointed with his bout at UFC 111 last night. According to UFC President Dana White, fans were expressing their discontent with the St-Pierre – Dan Hardy main event on his Twitter.
“I stay on Twitter and I can tell you this… the fans were not happy with tonight’s fight,” White noted at the UFC 111 post-fight press conference. “My twitter was blowing up with a lot of negative stuff about the main event.”
St-Pierre expressed his disappointment immediately after being awarded the decision, and apologized for his performance after the bout.
“It’s a win, but I’m not very happy of myself,” St-Pierre admitted after the fight. “I did a lot of stupid technical mistakes… I thought I’d fight him where I thought he was the weakest – on the ground. But he’s a lot better than I thought he was.
“I just want to apologize to my fans,” St-Pierre continued. “I’m sorry, I’m going to come back better next time. I’m very sorry, I wanted to finish this fight in beautiful fashion and I’m very sorry.”
White felt that some of the blame in the lack of action during last night’s fight lies squarely on the shoulders of the challenger. St-Pierre neutralized Hardy from the onset of the bout and spent the majority of the five rounds scoring takedown after takedown and controlling Hardy on the ground.
“This is mixed martial arts,” White continued. “Dan Hardy came in to fight the best 170-pounder in the world. When you show up to fight him, you better have some takedown defense.
“Not every fight on the card is going to be the greatest fight in the world,” said White. “It happens sometimes.”
