Shane Carwin took a giant step towards finally getting his long-awaited fight with UFC Heavyweight Champion Brock Lesnar, as Carwin defeated Frank Mir at UFC 111 tonight to become the new UFC Interim Heavyweight Champion. Carwin only needed 3:48 to knock Mir out and keep his undefeated streak – as well as his streak of ending all of his fights in the first round – intact.
“It’s a life time of work right here,” Carwin said after the fight. “It’s possible for every American out there.”
Carwin was originally slated to face UFC Heavyweight Champion Brock Lesnar for the title last November until Lesnar fell ill after contracting diverticulitis. The bout was re-scheduled for this past January, but when it seemed like Lesnar’s illness may be career-ending, Carwin was offered a bout with Cain Velasquez for the interim heavyweight championship – a bout which also fell through. Carwin was finally offered the fight with Mir. Despite the change in opponents, Carwin feels that he’s destined to face Lesnar.
“Finally baby, finally!” Carwin exclaimed about facing Lesnar. “That fight was canceled two times. It’s destiny that we meet.”
Lesnar entered the cage after the bout to congratulate Carwin. Carwin recently admitted in an interview with FightLine.com that his bout with Mir tonight wasn’t for the real championship, a point that Lesnar made sure to reiterate.
“It was a good fight, but he’s wearing a belt that’s a make-believe belt,” Lesnar noted to Carwin. “It was a good fight Shane, but that’s the wrong belt you’re wearing. I’ve got the championship belt. That’s the bottom line baby.”
Carwin was quick to agree with Lesnar, stating, “I couldn’t agree more baby, that’s why I’m coming after it.”
Carwin and Lesnar will likely battle for the UFC Heavyweight Championship this summer.
