Thiago Alves To Have Minor Brain Surgery

Some great news surfaced late Friday night regarding the health status of former #1 welterweight contender Thiago Alves. The Brazilian will undergo a minor outpatient procedure this Wednesday and is expected to return to training in 2-3 weeks.

“I went and saw a specialist this morning who told me I need to have the minor procedure,” Alves told

Alves will undergo the knife in New York and it is believed that the surgery will correct the “brain irregularity” that the New Jersey State Athletic Commission found in his pre-fight CT scan on Wednesday morning.

According to American Top Team trainer Ricardo Liborio, the doctor who recommended that Alves have the minor procedure couldn’t confirm how the irregularity happened, but is confident the issue is not career-threatening.

“There is always a risk when you do a procedure like this, but we are hopeful that Thiago will be back training to fight within three weeks,” Libirio told Sherdog.

It is believed “The Pitbull” could return as early as UFC 114 on May 29th in Las Vegas, Nevada.
