UFC heavyweight Junior dos Santos claims he’s ready to challenge champion Brock Lesnar for his title and it’s pretty tough to argue after the Brazilian posted his second consecutive first round TKO victory Sunday night at “UFC on Versus.”
“If you guys like to watch good knockouts, I’m here to give you good knockouts,” dos Santos emphatically stated after putting former top contender Gabriel Gonzaga to sleep at 3:53 in the opening stanza.
The Team Black House fighter stakes claim to a dominant 11-1 MMA record and has unleashed devastating finishes in all of his victories. The 25-year-old is currently riding a six-fight winning streak, with the last five coming inside the Octagon.
“Fight with the best,” dos Santos said when of about his immediate aspirations. “I think I’m ready. I’m ready for a title shot if the UFC wants. I’m ready.”
Although his resume is impressive, there are others in the division that are just as deserving of a title shot as dos Santos. After Frank Mir and Shane Carwin battle this Saturday at “UFC 111: St-Pierre vs. Hardy” for the interim championship, a lot of questions should be answered in terms of pecking order…
Or they may not as you must also throw Cain Velasquez’s name into the heavyweight hat alongside Mir, Carwin and dos Santos as well. It was only one month ago Veleasquez submitted his application for a chance at UFC gold after he posted a vicious TKO win over MMA legend Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira at UFC 110.
“They’re all going to fight,” UFC president Dana White said of his extensive heavyweight roster at the UFC on Versus post-fight presser. “All these guys in that lineup are going to fight, but we’ve got to figure out how it’s all going to go down.
“Mir and Carwin are going to get this thing started. We’ll see what happens there, and the great thing is, we’re a week away from that.”
