The question everybody is asking after Junior Dos Santos destroyed Gabriel Gonzaga at UFC Live: Vera vs. Jones is: title shot or not? That’s a complicated question because of where the heavyweight division stands right now.
Not only do Frank Mir and Shane Carwin have to settle the interim score, but the winner will have to face current champ Brock Lesnar sometime in the summer before Dos Santos can even think about fighting for the strap.
After his victory, despite the timetable, Dos Santos proclaimed that he was indeed ready for a shot at the title. The young Brazilian’s situation parallels another heavyweight prospect waiting for his shot as well—Cain Velasquez.
Due to the scheduling difficulties that would have to be surpassed in order for either one of these fighters to get a crack at the belt, it only makes sense that they would fight each other in the meantime.
Cage Potato is reporting that Dos Santos shares the same opinions.
“I don’t know who I’m gonna fight [next]. I’d like to fight against [Cain] Velasquez. He’s a tough guy, but the UFC has other great names too,” Dos Santos explained.
“I just wanna fight against the best and with the best, that’s what I’m waiting from the UFC now. [Velasquez is] a very complete guy. His wrestling is superior than mine, but I think I can surprise him on striking. I’d train a lot of ground game for this fight too, it could make some difference”
Cain Velasquez was last seen shocking the MMA world by crushing legend Antonio “Big Nog” Nogueira in the first round at UFC 110.
The two heavyweight Brazilians are not only close friends outside the octagon; they are fierce training partners at Black House. Would revenge be motivation for Dos Santos to want to fight Velasquez? The Brazilian says no.
“It’s not about revenge, I’m cool with that, so is Rodrigo,” Dos Santos reassured. “I’d fight Cain for who he is, an undefeated fighter, a great fighter inside the UFC. I’d like to face him because of that. This revenge thing, I think Rodrigo can get that.”
