Apparently somewhere in the “UFC On Versus” pre-fight interviews, Brandon Vera said something that upset Jon Jones. The tension that had built between the two was on display during the weigh-ins where the normally soft-spoken Jones got into Vera’s face, forcing UFC president Dana White to separate the two men. It seems that “Bones” brought that extra aggression into the cage with him as well, as he needed less than a round to dispatch Vera and leave him with a severely damaged face.
Vera’s manager, Matt Stansell, told MMAJunkie today that his client received three fractures to his right cheekbone.
“The whole right side of Brandon’s face was numb,” he said.
The fractures came when Jones landed a brutal elbow from Vera’s guard about halfway into the first round. Vera rolled away while clutching his face and Jones sealed the deal with a few more punches for good measure.
Medical suspensions for the fight have not been announced yet, but with injuries like that it will likely be some time before we see Brandon Vera back in the Octagon. Vera is set to meet with a facial specialist this week to determine the extent of the damage he sustained and to determine when he will be able to return. He will most likely receive an indefinite suspension with a return to competition depending on a physician’s clearance.
