It was supposed to be a Muay Thai practitioner’s dream, but the main event at “UFC on Versus: Vera vs. Jones” on Sunday night was a one-sided beatdown courtesy of rising light heavyweight star, Jon “Bones” Jones.
Brandon Vera was never able to get going as Jones scored two early takedowns and landed a vicious left elbow to Vera’s right cheek that ultimately ended their scrap as “The Truth” immediately rolled over in severe pain.
Jones started raining down bombs on Vera’s head as he gave him his back, leaving referee Herb Dean with no choice but to step-in at 3:19 in the first round and award the 22-year-old with the TKO victory.
“I definitely didn’t take Brandon Vera lightly, I studied him night and day,” Jones stated after the win.
Prior to the final damaging blows, Jones’ athleticism and reach advantage presented a challenge that Vera couldn’t solve. The Filipino had a difficult time keeping Jones’ posture under control while he had “Bones” in his full-guard.
Jones certainly lived up to all the hoopla as he easily bumped his record to a dominant 10-1 mark. His only blemish came in a controversial DQ against Matt Hamill at “The Ultimate Fighter 10 Finale” when he landed an illegal north-south elbow to Hamill’s face.
“I try not to pay attention to the hype, but I do recognize that it’s there. I guess the only thing it does is make me try to live up to the potential,” a very humble Jones said. “I think that potential is the biggest thing to waste and it’s the worst thing to waste.”
