According to a report from Fighters Only, prominent Brazilian Mauy Thai instructor Luiz Alves died at Santa Teresinha Hospital in Brazil; possibly from injuries related to a car accident that occurred in late January.
It is believed that the 54 year-old Alves suffered a stroke while driving his car in late January; he was later put under a medically induced coma due to injuries sustained in the subsequent accident. Despite the seriousness of his injuries his death was unexpected. He awoke from the induced coma two days ago and his recovery was thought to be going well; a fact which made the news of his death even harder on his friends and family.
Luiz Alves was head striking coach to Mixed Martial Arts legends and brothers Antonio Rodrigo and Antonio Rogerio Nogueira as well as to a number of other Brazilian fighters. Alves was also president of the Brazilian Muay Thai Association. He is survived by his wife and children.
