Fighters Only ran a cryptic article on their website that credits an industry source for giving them the information that Tito Ortiz will be replaced by Rich Franklin in a fight with Chuck Liddell. The website claims that it is not an injury that will prevent “The Huntington Beach Bad Boy” from competing, but an as yet non-disclosable issue that could apparently put his entire fight career in jeopardy.
Liddell and Ortiz served as coaches opposite one another on this season of “The Ultimate Fighter” reality show. Traditionally, the coaches face off in the Octagon upon the conclusion of the show’s airing and rumor had the two pioneers fighting in June at UFC 115 in Vancouver.
In a swirl of interesting rumors, the word now is that Liddell and former UFC middleweight champion Rich “Ace” Franklin will be fighting each other as the main attraction of the UFC’s free-on-Spike TV April 17th show in Nashville; planned as counter-programming to a Strikeforce show that will be held on the same night in Tennessee.
Although the Tennessee State Athletic Committee has yet to receive an application from the UFC to hold an event on the 17th, they still have time to do so and they could be waiting until the last minute to make it more difficult for Strikeforce to move their event to a later date.
Ortiz has been posting strange messages on his Twitter account that have had people conjuring rumors for some time now. It will be interesting to see if the rumors are true and, if so, what besides an injury could possibly threaten Ortiz’s future in the fight business.
