While the ink is barely dry from James Toney signing with the UFC yesterday, UFC Hall Of Famer Randy Couture has made it clear that he would like to be the first to face the former boxing champion in the Octagon.
“I hope I’m the first guy they call to fight tony! [sic] :),” Couture wrote on his Twitter account hours after the UFC announced Toney’s signing. Moments later Couture once again tweeted about Toney, writing, “I hope they set me up with tony! [sic].”
Like Couture, Toney is over 40 and has won world titles in different weight classes. He has won titles in three weight classes while taking on a Who’s Who of the sport, including fellow champions Evander Holyfield, John Ruiz, Hasim Rahman, Vassiliy Jirov, Roy Jones Jr., Mike McCallum, Iran Barkley, and Michael Nunn.
Meanwhile, Couture is one of only two fighters to have held a UFC championship title in two different divisions (heavyweight and light heavyweight). A bout between the two would truly be a clash of two legends in different sports.
No date or opponent has been set for Toney’s UFC debut.
