UFC heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar emerged from seclusion yesterday to let the MMA world know that he’s recovering nicely from diverticulitis and if all goes well, fans can expect to see some fireworks this Independence Day weekend.
“I feel really good. I’m back to training, I started mini camp last week and I feel great,” Lesnar told KFAN Sports Radio AM 1130. “Everything is on track. Starting to build the base up again and get ready to fight hopefully mid-summer.
“We’re thinking about July 3rd Las Vegas right now.”
Lesnar was last seen annihilating Frank Mir at UFC 100 en route to unifying the heavyweight crown. After his dominating effort, Lesnar contracted mononucleosis and parlayed that into an infection that ate away at his intestines.
Although his life hung in the balance, Lesnar was able to make a “miraculous” recovery and is set to defend his strap against the victor of the co-main event at UFC 111.
“I’m fighting the winner of Frank Mir and Shane Carwin,” Lesnar said of his next foe. “If one of those guys are unable to fight after that fight, I’ll probably fight Cain Velasquez from my understanding.
“I’d really like to fight Frank Mir again. I am truly hoping that Frank wins this fight so it sets us up for July and maybe the next beat down will … (laughter) … I don’t know what I have to do to shut him up.”
That’s not much of a shocker after Mir unleashed a verbal assault on Lesnar earlier this week and has been “stalking” the former WWE employee since getting mauled last July.
Because Lesnar’s sitting the sidelines waiting for his next assignment, the champ states that he has the luxury of diverting his attention to talk smack, where Mir would be best served focusing on his appointment at the Jersey Shore.
“The guy should probably just focus on the task in front of him, which is Shane Carwin, because if Shane Carwin beats his ass he won’t be fighting me,” Lesnar stated. “Hopefully he gets past Shane Carwin so I can put another beat down on him.”
