MMAJunkie.com is reporting that the Nevada State Athletic Commission has received a formal request from The Ultimate Fighting Championship to host an event on July 3rd at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.
The current, tentative schedule of UFC events likely means that this event will be UFC 116.
Early rumors have UFC Heavyweight Champion Brock Lesnar making his return on this card; possibly against the winner of either Frank Mir Vs. Shane Carwin or Cain Velasquez Vs. Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira. Lesnar has been out of action since July 2009 when he defended the title in brutal fashion in a rematch against Frank Mir. Lesnar was out dealing with a life-threatening case of diverticulitis. Both he and UFC President Dana White have said that the beleaguered champion is looking to make a return in early summer.
This event will mark the UFC’s fourth show on the Fourth of July weekend. White has stated that plans are to make a fight on that date an annual occurrence, joining the end of the year show and the Super Bowl weekend show as one of the promotion’s biggest fight cards of the year.
