Demian Maia Talks UFC 112

Most fans were surprised Demian Maia received the nod to replace the injured Vitor Belfor at UFC 112, but nobody was more shocked that Maia would challenge Anderson Silva for his crown than the Brazilian Jiu Jitsu wizard himself.

We all know how unpredictable and unreliable the Internet rumor mill can be, so when Maia caught wind that he would be Silva’s next foe, he took matters into his own hands on Friday afternoon and started dialing.

“Alonso, have you heard about the news?” as Maia called Marcelo Alonso of “I’m going to fight Anderson for the belt!”

Maia was like a kid in a candy store when his cell inexplicably rang with the UFC on the other end. It was an opportunity of a lifetime and he wasn’t about to pass it up even after just taking a unanimous decision over a gritty Dan Miller last Saturday at “UFC 109: Relentless.”

“I still can’t believe I was chosen,” Maia emphatically stated. “When my manager called me, I immediately said, ‘Yes.’ After all, I dreamed of that possibility my whole life.”

The middleweight owns an impressive 12-1 professional record and has finished off eight of his opponents via some form of wicked submission.

Although Maia realizes the opportunity that awaits him, he knows it can quickly become his biggest nightmare as “The Spider” is no joke. Having won 11 consecutive en route to cementing his spot as MMA’s baddest 185-pounder, Silva will be looking to make his seventh successful title defense.

“I respect him very much,” Mai said of the champion. “I consider Anderson and BJ [Penn] the best pound-for-pound fighters in the world, but I’ll train hard to beat him. I don’t want to waste the chance of my life.”

UFC 112 will be taking place at the Concert Arena in Abu Dhabi on April 10th.
