It is being reported by MMAJunkie.com that undefeated UFC newcomers Phil Davis (5-0) and Alexander Gustafsson (9-0) will square off on the preliminary portion of the UFC 112 fight card. This apparently puts to rest the rumors that Phil Davis would be out of competition for some time due to a shoulder injury.
Penn State wrestling product Phil Davis entered the UFC as an exciting light heavyweight prospect and he did not disappoint in his debut; he dominated the ever-tough Brian Stann at “UFC 109: Relentless” en route to a lopsided unanimous decision win. A former NCAA champ, Davis’ pure athleticism was on display against Stann as he hit takedowns with ease and showed familiarity with his striking. “Mr. Wonderful” is a four time All-American wrestler and spends time training with Brandon Vera and Master Lloyd Irvin in San Diego.
Sweden native Alexander Gustaffson will look to continue his nine fight win streak when he takes on Davis at UFC 112. Gustaffson has spent the entirety of his career fighting in Europe; even making his UFC debut at UFC 105 in Manchester, England. He took on John Hamman in that fight and won by knockout in the first round in a blitzing performance. “The Mauler” has won seven of his nine fights by knockout or technical knockout; the other two were won by submission and unanimous decision.
UFC 112 will take place on April 10 at Concert Arena in Ferrari World on Yas Island in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. The card features an updated matchup between Vitor Belfort’s replacement, Demian Maia, and middleweight champ Anderson Silva for the 185lbs belt. Also defending his belt will be lightweight champion BJ Penn; he will be taking on contender Frankie Edgar.
