Tonight’s “Strikeforce: Miami” preliminary bout between Jay Hieron and Joe Riggs just got a lot more interesting as it’s being reported the winner will earn welterweight top contender status.
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu wizard Nick Diaz will face current Dream champion Marius Zaromskis tomorrow night to determine who will become the first Strikeforce welterweight king. Normally there is a cooling off period before a champ is assigned his next foe, but that doesn’t appear to be the case here.
“It’s going to be a great fight and Jay (Hieron) will fight the winner,” Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker told MMAWeekly.com regarding who gets next dibs.
Although Coker is practically assuring Hieron a five-round title affair after his contest with Riggs, he simply said that Riggs would “likely” leapfrog into the top contender spot if he were to take out the Xtreme Couture-trained fighter.
Fans will be treated to a free and live stream of the Hieron/Riggs scrap on EASports.com’s MMA page tonight beginning at 9:05PM EST/6:05PM PST.
The main bouts can be seen on Showtime starting at 10PM ET/PT. Diaz and Zaromskis will headline the highly anticipated event inside the BankAtlantic Center in Sunrise, Florida.
