Despite remaining undefeated and beating Nate Diaz via split decision at UFC Fight Night 20 this past Monday night, UFC lightweight Gray Maynard is not looking at fighting division champion BJ Penn… yet.
While Randy Couture, Maynard’s trainer, is confident that Maynard could beat Penn if they met, he does feel that his student could benefit from more training time.
“I think he’s capable of beating B.J. Penn right now,” Couture said. “But I think a little more experience would do him well.”
Maynard shared Couture’s thoughts, but added that he would fight Penn if he were asked.
“If they want me to (fight Penn), I guess I will,” Maynard told MMAJunkie.com. “But it all depends on the timing. We’ll have to see what they say.
“I just go where the bosses tell me to, Maynard continued. “Whatever they say. … Whatever they want, I’ll be ready.”
For now, Penn will be facing Frankie Edgar at UFC 112. The event will take place on April 10, 2010 in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates.
