Frankie Edgar Next In Line For BJ Penn

The debate regarding who should be BJ Penn’s next opponent just came to an end as UFC president Dana White confirmed that Frankie Edgar has earned the nod to fight for Penn’s crown. White told Ariel Helwani of of Edgar’s top contender status yesterday in New York.

The door was open for Maynard to leapfrog into a five-round affair with the Hawaiian, however his less than spectacular split decision win over Nate Diaz at UFC Fight Night 20 on Monday night took him out of the title picture.

When the 155-pound bout was originally put together, many MMA pundits believed that Maynard was next in line had he impressively gotten past Diaz, especially if you take into account that Maynard handed Edgar his only professional blemish by taking a unanimous decision over the Jersey boy in April 2008.
