There’s not much to complain about if you’re a sports fan this weekend as the NFL’s Wild Card games play the perfect lead-in to Sunday night’s “WEC 46: Varner vs. Henderson” event inside the Arco Arena in Sacto, California. Don’t forget to check out the WEC lightweight title unification fight between interim champ Ben Henderson and champ Jaimie Varner on Versus, it should be sick.
Varner was last seen taking a controversial split decision over Donald Cerrone at WEC 38 earlier this year in San Diego, CA. The fight was stopped in the 5thRound due to an unintentional knee to Varner’s head.
Under the regulations of the California State Athletic Commission, a fight automatically goes to the judges’ score cards when unintentional strikes leave a fighter unable to continue, allowing Varner to retain his title.
Following the fight, Varner announced that he had broken his right hand and has been on the mend ever since. He was slated to rematch Cerrone at WEC 43, however continued to have issues with his haymaker which forced the organization to manufacture an interim bout between Cerrone and Henderson, which turned out to be the surprise scrap of the 2009.
The two sensational lightweights battled for five unforgettable rounds, warranting many MMA pundits to dub the contest as a potential Fight of the Year. Henderson took a unanimous decision and walked out of the AT&T Center in San Antonio, Texas with WEC gold.
