Thiago “Pitbull” Alves is slated for a UFC 111 return which will take place in March of 2010. According to MMAweekly.com, Alves’ managers have confirmed that the fighter has recovered from a PCL ligament tear and has begun training.
Alves, a top welterweight, will be making his return on the same card as welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre, who will be defending his title against Team Roughhouse competitor Dan “The Outlaw” Hardy. St. Pierre was last seen in the octagon dominating Thiago Alves at UFC 100 in July to retain the championship. Since that monumental night, St. Pierre has spent time off healing a torn abductor he sustained in the Alves fight, while “The Pitbull” was geared to originally face Jon Fitch at UFC 107 until the PCL injury put the Brazilian on the sidelines.
Alves’ representative, Malki Kawa, has not confirmed welterweight contender Jon Fitch as Alves’ next opponent but rumors have said otherwise. The two have a history with a fight dating back to 2006 when Fitch claimed a knockout win due to a high kick and punches at UFC Fight Night 5. The rematch could propel both men to the front of the contender-ship line for the welterweight belt; a spot has not provided positive results for either when each faced against current champ St-Pierre.
Jon Fitch (21-3) recently defeated a resilient Mike Pierce via unanimous decision at UFC 107: Penn vs. Sanchez. During the fight, Fitch did not seem to have received any injuries making his rematch with Thiago Alves (16-6) more of a reality as long as each fighter can remain healthy during their training camps. Though, nothing has been made official so Alves’ opponent is still to be announced.
UFC 111 will be held in Newark, New Jersey on March 27th 2010.
