The results are in and UFC Welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre is named Sportsnet’s 2009 ‘Canadian Athlete of the Year.’ GSP won the same honor last year, and edged out Stanley Cup champion Sidney Crosby to claim this year’s title.
“Thanks to Sportsnet, all the fans. It’s an honour to win the award two years in a row,” St-Pierre told Sportsnet earlier this week. “Congratulations to Sidney Crosby, it is a great honour to be nominated with him.”
Sports fans voted on-line for a week and gave GSP around 60% of the vote. The adoration towards the UFC Welterweight champion is largely due to his incredible athletic ability which has earned him the title of top “pound for pound” fighter by many in the MMA community.
GSP will return to action soon, as he is scheduled to defend his title against Dan Hardy at UFC 111 in March 2010.
