BJ Penn (c) vs. Diego Sanchez
Round 1: Loud chants of “BJ” early on. Penn clipped Sanchez right off the bat and started raining down with a flurry of punches. Penn continued the assault and got on top of Sanchez. Amazingly, Sanchez got back to his feet, the fight almost looked like it was over. Penn was able to hit Sanchez with another uppercut, and Sanchez was able to press Penn against the cage. Sanchez landed an elbow and then both men were back to the center f the cage. Sanchez is visibly tentative, and Penn is stalking the challenger. Sanchez went for a takedown, but Penn defended it. Penn caught Sanchez with a couple more big strikes as the round ended. FightLine.com scores the round 10-9 for Penn, almost a 10-8.
Round 2: Penn started the round stalking Sanchez again. Sanchez went for another takedown, but Penn was able to defend again. Penn continued to press forward and outclass the challenger. Penn used his superior head movement to dodge Sanchez’s attacks, and he made him pay for it. Sanchez went for the leg again late in the round, but Penn was able to make the most of it, dropping punches from the top. FightLine.com scores the round 10-9 for Penn.
Round 3: Penn started aggressive again, but Sanchez was able to press Penn against the cage. Sanchez tried to work on the takedown, but Penn was able to shrug it off and get back to the center of the cage. Sanchez kept trying – unsuccessfully – for the takedown, but wasn’t able to get anything going. Penn landed a couple of punches right before the round ended. Round 4: Penn continued to counter everything Sanchez was throwing at him. Penn defended another takedown attempt and landed shots while Sanchez had Penn pressed against the cage. The round was more of the same, another round for the champion. FightLine.com scores the round 10-9 for Penn.
Round 5: Penn landed a nice body shot as the round started. Sanchez attempted yet another takedown that was stuffed. It was time to stop trying that three rounds ago. Penn managed to bring Sanchez to the ground, but both fighters were quickly back to their feet. Penn landed some big shots and looked to be attempting to finish the fight. Penn turned it on, and Sanchez was cut bad over his eye. The fight was stopped due to the cut. Another dominant performance from the champion.
UFC lightweight champion BJ Penn defeated Diego Sanchez via doctor’s stoppage (cut) at 2:37 of Round 5.
After the bout, Penn said he was keeping his mouth shut, but he always wanted to fight Diego Sanchez. He then said that all his questions would be answered on BJPenn.com.
Diego, who looked like a bad car accident after the bout, said that BJ was a great champion. He then said that he will be back.
