Although nothing has been confirmed, sources close to the bout have said that Nate Marquardt and Chael Sonnen are just waiting for their bout agreements to make the fight official. Sportsnet.ca has reported that the rumored bout will take place at UFC 110 on February 21st in Sydney, Australia.
The other rumored bouts for the UFC’s first event in Australia are:
Krzysztof Soszynski vs. Stephan Bonnar
Mirko Cro Cop vs. Ben Rothwell
Wanderlei Silva vs. Yoshihiro Akiyama
After defeating Demian Maia with an amazing 21-second knockout at UFC 102, Marquardt was hoping that he’d be the next guy in line to get a crack at Anderson Silva.
Unfortunately, Vitor Belfort came back to the octagon at UFC 103 and stole Marquardt’s thunder by easily disposing of former champion Rich Franklin.
With Silva still healing from elbow surgery, there’s no timetable for his return. At the risk of losing his current position on the middleweight ladder, Marquardt has decided to accept a bout with Sonnen.
A win for Marquardt should all but guarantee a rematch with arguably the best pound-for-pound fighter in MMA, that is if Silva can get past Belfort.
