The dust hasn’t even settled from last night’s UFC 104, and UFC President Dana White is already set to make a rematch between UFC light heavyweight champion Lyoto Machida and Mauricio “Shogun” Rua.
Machida defeated Shogun via a controversial unanimous decision, with all the judges scoring the fight 48-47. It was a decision that the crowd strongly disagreed with, and we here at FightLine.com had the fight scored 49-46 for Shogun.
“I’m ready to make the rematch as fast as we can,” White stated after the event. “People were telling me that Machida was a huge favorite in this fight [it was pointed out that he was a 6-1 favorite]. Those people just didn’t know Shogun yet. Machida has been absolutely dominant in his performances, even before coming into the UFC, so I love this rematch, I think it’s a great rematch.”
White stated that even though he thought it was a good fight, he felt that both fighters could pressed more at the end of the rounds.
“I knew what a good fight it was going to be,” he said. “This is a fight between two of the best technical strikers in the business. I knew it was going to be a tough one, it was going to be strategic and it was everything that I thought it was going to be. They should have pressed more at the end of the rounds and went after it and really try to pull out a win at the end of the rounds and make it an easier fight to score. It was a tough fight to score.”
After the fight, even with a loss, it appeared that Shogun’s stock in the company had went way up, while Machida’s came crashing down.
“These guys are both very tough guys,” White explained. “Shogun is a great fighter who’s been off for two knee surgeries and had a bunch of time off. I said before, we’ll be seeing the Shogun who was fighting in PRIDE fighting Machida tonight, and it was.”
As for Lyoto Machida, White feels that the Machida mystique will still be around.
“I think Lyoto Machida is still a freak of nature,” he noted. “What makes him so great, he can do things that other people can’t do. And honestly, he didn’t show it tonight, but he’ll use his left leg and throw two kicks with his left leg and one with his right like they’re hands, and you don’t see people do that.”
White stated that he expected a rematch to be very different from last night’s bout, saying, “The rematch will be a different fight from both guys. No one wants to lose and win a fight the way these guys did, it doesn’t feel good for anybody. So I guarantee you that the next fight is going to be much different.
“And I want to see it,” White admitted. “I wanna see this fight again.”
