UFC middleweight Mark Munoz has signed-on to face Ryan Jensen at UFC 108 inside the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. The talented Munoz rebounded nicely from his first pro loss at UFC 96 against Matt Hamill by posting a split decision win over Nick Catone at UFC 102 in August.
A source close to the situation confirmed yesterday with 5thRound.com that the fight is a-go after Munoz recently autographed the bout agreement.
Munoz was signed by the UFC earlier this year after the WEC decided to eliminate their middle and light heavyweight divisions. Zuffa, LLC, the parent company for the UFC and WEC, promoted him to MMA’s biggest stage after he schooled his only two WEC opponents.
His only blemish came at the hands, or should we say foot, of the aforementioned Hamill in a light heavyweight affair. The Filipino was understandably caught off guard back in March when the notorious wrestler unleashed a highlight-reel head kick.
Having bounced back with a strong 185-pound performance against a game Catone, it’s clear the middleweight division is where the 31-year-old will make his Octagon imprint.
Jensen holds a respectable 14-5 mark, however has dropped four of his last seven. He caught Steve Steinbeiss in a sick guillotine in the first round of their UFC Fight Night 19 contest last month.
Outside of champion Anderson Silva and a couple of top contenders he has already defeated, the slots on the UFC’s middleweight totem pole are up for grabs so a win here is imperative for both fighters to get in the mix.
It’s believed the January 2nd scrap will take place on the non-televised portion of the pay-per-view broadcast.
Here are the other fighters rumored to be competing in the January 2nd show:
Cole Miller vs. Dan Lauzon
Joe Lauzon vs. Sam Stout
Mark Munoz vs. Ryan Jensen
Tyson Griffin vs. Jim Miller
Carlos Condit vs. Paul Daley
Junior Dos Santos vs. Gabe Gonzaga
Thiago Silva vs. Rashad Evans
Vitor Belfort vs. Anderson Silva (UFC Middleweight Champion)
