Making Too Much Of Roy Nelson’s Win Over Kimbo?

Although his “The Ultimate Fighter: Heavyweights” exhibition match against Kevin “Kimbo Slice” Ferguson will not go down as an official win, it was a big victory for “Big Country.” However, was anyone really surprised? Nelson certainly wasn’t as the MMA vet dominated his inexperienced counterpart to an easy second round TKO.

“I called it the night before,” Nelson said at Thursday’s teleconference. “I just wanted to point out to the guys that this was how I was going to win. And guess what? That’s how I won. I did a Babe Ruth. I hit my home run.”

I guess it’s pretty easy to hit a homer against a kid when you’re a grown man, but that is exactly what their heavyweight showdown looked like. The UFC is the big leagues and Kimbo clearly has a long ways to go. Nelson did a great job in exposing that even further.

However, Kimbo’s name is much bigger than his game at this point, so let’s not get carried away with the victory. UFC president Dana White echoed the same sentiment in his interview immediately following the bout stating that Nelson didn’t inflict any damage to Kimbo, he just took advantage of his superior ground skills.

“For the most part, with me, it’s real simple,” Nelson said in response to his non-violent victory. “Dana spent the last nine seasons saying just go in there, take as little damage as possible and win the fight. He hits hard, but he’s not the hardest guy I’ve ever been hit by.

“I did exactly what I wanted to do and baited him in where I could get to the clinch and just take him down. I couldn’t have done it any better.”

Many were surprised when Nelson, a former IFL heavyweight champion, threw his name in the hat for the heavyweight tournament. Most fighters at his level don’t need “TUF,” however MMA’s biggest gut decided the reality show would be the best way for him to make the biggest splash.

“I knew it was a good business decision to go this route and basically introduce myself to the UFC fans,” he said. “As far as fighting goes, it was just another day at the office.”
