Many reports have surfaced stating that UFC middleweight champion will be on the shelf for the remainder of the year due to recent surgery on his elbow. However, according to Anderson Silva’s manager, Ed Soares, Silva hasn’t had any surgery and could compete as early as November. Who could Silva’s next opponent be? All signs appear to be former UFC light heavyweight and heavyweight champion Randy Couture.
“Anderson wants to fight the biggest and the best fighters out there and Randy Couture falls into that category,” Soares told Kevin Iole of Yahoo! Sports.
Iole confirmed speaking to Soares regarding Silva’s rumored surgery, stating, “I spoke to Ed Soares, Silva’s manager, and contrary to published reports, Silva has not had surgery on his elbow and is not in any way incapable of fighting in November if he’s offered a fight.”
A Couture/Silva superfight could headline the UFC’s year end pay-per-view card. Couture also spoke about fighting only in interesting fights following his loss to Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira at UFC 102.
“I’m interested in interesting fights. There are a lot of guys in both divisions that are interesting to fight,” Couture said following the announcement of his new 6-fight, 28-month UFC contract extension.
A bout featuring Couture stepping into the Octagon with the world’s best pound-for-pound fighter would definitely be very interesting. Not a bad consolation prize for Couture, who missed out on a mega-fight with Fedor Emelianenko.
