Randy Couture recently appeared on The Scoop presented by Full Tilt Poker to discuss some parallels between poker and MMA, and quite surprisingly, there appear to be a few. He also had some interesting things to say about how he feels coming into his fight against Antonio “Minatauro” Nogueria at UFC 102, and his interest in a potential fight with current UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Lyoto Machida.
Speaking on the current state of MMA athletes, Couture noted that “the level of athlete has gone way up. We’re now cross-training in everything. The level of competition has gone increased significantly. We’re now world-class athletes.”
Couture was later asked what it’s like to compete against much younger fighters at the age of 46.
“It doesn’t really matter to me. I’m focused on the technical aspect of the competition. I need to watch my body a little more closely now, but I’m more explosive and stronger than I’ve ever been,” Couture said.
Couture also expressed a sincere interest in facing light heavyweight champion sometime Lyoto Machida down the road.
“I’m very intrigued by him,” Couture admitted. “He’s so patient, he’s gonna fight the way he wants to fight. And he’s very successful at doing it. That would be a fight I’d be very interested in. I know I would have to rely heavily on my wrestling background and engage him, cut off his angles. He poses some very interesting problems. I would welcome that test.”
Couture faces Antonio Rodrigo “Minotauro” Nogueira at UFC 102, live from Portland, Oregon’s Rose Garden on Saturday, August 29, 2009.
