Notable Edits Made During Spike TV’s ‘UFC 100′ Special

The UFC countered last night’s “Strikeforce: Carano vs. Cyborg” event by airing a “UFC 100″ special for free on Spike TV. The special included three fights from the main card, as well as three never-before-televised preliminary bouts.

The Brock Lesnar – Frank Mir heavyweight title fight, Yoshihiro Akiyama vs. Alan Belcher and Dan Henderson vs. Michael Bisping aired from the main card, while Mark Coleman vs. Stephan Bonnar, Shannon Gugerty vs. Matt Grice and Jon Jones vs. Jake O’Brien aired from the preliminary card.

There were some notable edits to the fights from the main card. After the Akiyama – Belcher fight, they immediately cut to a commercial after Akiyama was announced the victor, cutting out Joe Rogan’s comments about Belcher being robbed and questioning how one of the judges could have scored all three rounds for Akiyama.

The edits in the next two fights were more prominent. After the Dan Henderson – Michael Bisping fight, part of Henderson’s post-fight interview was cut. During Henderson’s post-fight interview, after Henderson talked about how he expected Michael Bisping to circle into his power hand, they immediately jumped to Henderson at the post-fight press conference talking more about how Bisping circles right. Henderson’s comments about delivering the post-knockout blow to Bisping to “shut him up” were completely cut.

The post-fight sequence following the Brock Lesnar – Frank Mir fight was more heavily edited. Immediately after Lesnar defeated Mir, they cut to a replay, followed by Lesnar getting his hand raised and giving a thumbs-up to the camera. Lesnar getting into Mir’s face after the fight, his flipping off the crowd and his entire post-fight interview was cut.

It will be interesting to see how the special fares. The UFC did huge numbers when they aired Lesnar’s UFC 91 bout with Randy Couture to counter the “Affliction: Day Of Reckoning” pay-per-view event, doing a 1.73 rating and 2.3 million viewers, with just the Lesnar-Couture fight doing a 2.54 rating and 3.3 million viewers. However, that was with weeks of promotion, while the UFC 100 special was put together just days before it aired.
